On Saturday Aug 11th, the city of Benghazi witnessed the first ever health Mela in Libya brought to it by young Libyan students with different health-related backgrounds.

The Mela, an Indian word which means festival, event is a tradition in the UK and is done multiple times throughout the year by university students in order to screen the public for certain chronic diseases such as Diabetes, Hypertension and Obesity. The nature of the event includes stations, each one is concerned with a certain domain. At the end of the cycles, a percentage is calculated based on the domaines calculated. This percentage is an indication of the risk of developing any fatal heart conditions in the next ten years.

Moreover, the software calculates the probability of the person developing type two diabetes based on the questions asked and the data collected. After having witnessed such event in the UK, a couple of passionate medical students brought the idea of the event to Libya and received the proper support from certain entities. They worked hard all together and trained with their colleagues in order to do the first Mela ever here in Benghazi.

Cheering and smiling, people from all backgrounds came to witness the event. They all came to show support and have their health checked so that these young minds keep on giving this country for a better future.

According to the organisers, this event is just the start and there are promises that such thoughtful and productive ideas will keep on coming so that public awareness is spread and the educational level of the whole country as well as the level of health in the society are all raised.
